Basics of the Bulletproof Coffee Trend

What’s the first thing you do in the morning after you’ve turned off the alarm? For a large majority of Americans, it’s sleepwalking to the kitchen to make a cup of coffee.  The caffeine buzz is what you’re looking for, but research suggests that there are several health benefits associated with drinking a cup of joe. We drink over 400 billion cups every year, so it’s no surprise that it’s one of the world’s most widely consumed beverage. Our options for the morning jolt seem endless; cappuccino, latte, americano, cold brew, frappuccino, iced, french press, espresso, and the list goes on and on. One of the more recent additions to this list is Bulletproof coffee, a high performance drink that combines coffee, grass-fed butter and medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) oil.

 

The Origin of Bulletproof Coffee

Bulletproof coffee was created by technology entrepreneur Dave Asprey after his hiking trip to TIbet in 2004. At 18,000 ft above sea level and a chilly -10 degrees fahrenheit, his energy levels began to falter.  A guest house offered him a creamy cup of yak butter tea (a typical drink for the people in Tibet) and he instantly felt rejuvenated. Curious as to why it made him feel so good so quickly, he dove into years of research and eventually created his own warm power drink, naming it Bulletproof coffee.

The Ingredients

So what are the benefits and disadvantages of swapping out a plain cup of coffee and a typical breakfast for this drink?

Coffee Beans: It all starts with the beans. The research on coffee has shown significant health benefits, assuming you stick to 1-3 cups a day. Rich with antioxidants and nutrients like potassium, manganese and B vitamins, a few cups can help improve physical endurance and raise metabolism to help burn fat. For Bulletproof coffee, creator Asprey says It’s important to use high quality coffee beans that are mold-free, single origin and organic to receive the full benefits.

Grass-Fed Butter: High in essential nutrients, grass-fed butter contains Omega 3 fatty acids, vitamins A, D, E, and K, and rich in antioxidants. A dose of healthy fat will sustain energy for hours and boost cognitive function. Sticking to grass-fed is essential as non-grass fed butter has a different fat composition that doesn’t taste as good, or provide the same amount of nutrients.

MCT Oil: Medium-chain triglycerides are a form of fat that require less energy and enzymes to be digested when compared to long-chain triglycerides. This means they are absorbed easier since there is less work for the body to do. It’s been connected to health benefits including improved cognitive function and energy, weight management, and improved digestion.

 

Weighing the Pros and Cons

The magical merger of these 3 ingredients make up the popular coffee drink. Advocates say a cup in the morning helps with focus and mental clarity, suppresses hunger and aids in weight loss, provides steady energy, and gives the caffeine buzz without the jitters.  And while many agree with the advantages, one thing to be cautious of is the additional calorie intake. While a cup of black coffee has less than 5 calories, adding butter and MCT’s to coffee amount to an additional 450 calories and around 50 grams of fat. While a moderate amount of saturated fat is part of a healthy diet, drinking a day’s worth in one beverage might not be the best option for someone trying to lose weight. Drinking Bulletproof coffee as a meal replacement or a mini meal would be the better option.  

One more thing to be vigilant about is using the exact recipe of high quality beans, grass fed butter and MCT. Cutting corners on any of these ingredients means you are not getting the nutritional punch, the brain boosting molecules, and other health benefits associated to drinking Bulletproof coffee in the first place.

The Famous Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 heaping tablespoons of the highest quality coffee beans

  • 1 cup of boiling water

  • 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of MTC Oil

  • 1-2 tablespoons grass-fed, unsalted butter or ghee


Directions:

  • Make your coffee. Brew 1 cup (8-12 ounces) of coffee using filtered water with 2 ½ tablespoons of freshly ground high quality coffee beans. Use a french press or aeropress for ease of use.

  • Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of MCT oil (you can work up to 1-2 tablespoons over a week period).

  • Add 1 tablespoon grass-fed butter or ghee.

  • Mix it all in a blender for 20-30 seconds until the drink is creamy (Most Important Step!)

Optional Add Ins:

  • Cinnamon

  • Xylitol/Stevia/Monk Fruit

  • Unflavored Collagen Protein

  • 1 tablespoon Raw Cacao Powder
